Petition to: prioritise the quick completion of the unfinished safe cycle route between Westcott and Dorking in order to provide a direct, easy and practical route for those who need or want to travel without a car and who currently have to brave the hazardous section of the A25 to the east of Westcott, which is particularly dangerous for our vulnerable schoolchildren and nearly impossible for mobility scooters and parents with buggies.

This petition is now closed, as its deadline has passed.

We the undersigned petition Surrey County Council to prioritise the quick completion of the unfinished safe cycle route between Westcott and Dorking in order to provide a direct, easy and practical route for those who need or want to travel without a car and who currently have to brave the hazardous section of the A25 to the east of Westcott, which is particularly dangerous for our vulnerable schoolchildren and nearly impossible for mobility scooters and parents with buggies. Petition update 2 from the council, 08 February 2011

The organiser of the petition has provided the following information in respect of two events relating to the subject matter of the petition. Please see below for details. The Surrey County Council contact for these events is Steve Mitchell.

Further information

Surrey County Council are proposing to create a new cycle, equestrian and walking route linking Westcott with Dorking. The route will enable local people to avoid using the busy A25, providing a safe, traffic-free path running from St Johns Road to Milton Court Lane, including a link to Lince Lane. SCC Officers have arranged two information events for us to find out more about the proposals.

The first of these is THIS FRIDAY (!) which is the opportunity to see the path ‘on the ground’ on Friday 11th February at 10am (meet at the bottom of St Johns Road, Westcott, by the footbridge).

Then there is an exhibition at the Hut in Furlong Road, Westcott on Thursday 17th Feb, 3pm-5.30pm; SCC Officers will be there to answer questions and queries

Petition update 1 from the council, 03 December 2010

The petition has been referred to the Mole Valley Local Committee and will be presented to the meeting on 7 December 2010. As the final petition was not received 14 days before the meeting as required by the Council's Standing Orders, it will receive a response at the next formal meeting of the Mole Valley Local Committee on 3 March 2011.

Petitioners may be interested to note that the agenda for the Mole Valley Local Committee meeting on 7 December contains the following agenda item:

WESTCOTT TO DORKING CYCLEWAY
To provide an update on the planned cycle/pedestrian route between
the northern end of St Johns Road, Westcott and Milton Court (Unum),
Dorking

More details from petition creator

There is a direct, easy and practical route which runs above the Pippbrook floodplain along the hedgerow line then crosses this floodplain by the shortest practical route along the riverbank connecting to the Westcott bridges. SCC Officers have studied the flooding and have a practical & cost-effective plan of how to build along the Westcott riverbank. The landowner agrees to this route; also to realign the hedge to allow the route to stay out of the floodplain; he will also grant us bridlepath rights over FP113 to connect to Lince Lane BP - this gives children a safe off road route to the popular Westcott Sports Ground. The route is close to, of similar length to and will replace FP111 which runs through a busy farmyard & the floodplain. We lost £90K from SustransLinksToSchools because the cyclepath was not built. Sustrans say this is a dream route, we can reapply – but warn that funding is running out. Please approve this route today before a vulnerable user is killed on the A25.
